The Shady Side of Sun Protection for Outdoor Workers

A simple method of protection from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation (UV) is to seek out shade. However, employees aren’t always able to do this, especially when they work outdoors! That is why limiting sun exposure during the peak hours of 11 – 4 p.m. is an effective way to reduce the risk of over exposure. This can be done in several ways:

Employers:

  • Encourage workers to start earlier in the day
  • Where possible, move jobs indoor or into shady areas
  • Schedule any office work for midday
  • Rotate workers through areas so that their exposure is limited
  • Provide shade structures for refuge from the sun. Shade structures will also help prevent heat exhaustion!
  • Encourage workers to seek natural shade or provide built structures such as canopies, umbrellas, sails or tents for lunch break and coffee break.

Shade has limitations when it comes to in blocking out UV radiation: UV radiation can be reflected through trees and under structures. That is why it is necessary to view shade as only one part of protection. Remember to cover up with long sleeves, long pants a wide brimmed hat, wear sunglasses, and use sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher.
