Encouraging Cycling in Your Workplace
Encouraging and supporting cycling in your workplace will reduce your parking needs and increase your employees’ physical fitness.
CAN-BIKE, a nationally recognized bicycling safety training program, is coming to Waterloo Region. CAN-BIKE teaches cycling skills to adults and children who want to safely venture off sidewalks onto roads.
There are four reasons for regional involvement:
- encouraging physical activity of all residents;
- reducing the number of motor vehicle trips by encouraging greater bicycle use;
- improving air quality through reduced car use;
- and improving neighbourhoods by developing walkable/bikeable communities.
The Region of Waterloo is partnering with the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA and local municipalities to offer the CAN-BIKE programs.
The CAN-BIKE program begins with two, four-day train-the-trainer sessions in April. Successful participants will receive CAN-BIKE II certification, entitling them to teach one-day CAN-BIKE I workshops, which will be offered to the general public on May 24, 31 and June 7. The youth-level program will be offered as part of seven, one-week summer day camps at the A.R. Kaufman Y and RIM Park.
Employers may wish to host a course for their employees right at their work site or they may encourage employees to attend courses offered to the public.
