Congratulations to the 13 local businesses and institutions that were awarded for their tobacco control initiatives!
The awards were given to organizations that created policies or practices that go beyond what is required by the Smoke-Free Ontario Act. Some of the positive efforts made by these organizations include the provision of smoking cessation aids for employees such as counselling or the nicotine patch, the creation of smoke-free policies around building entrances, the creation of smoke-free properties, and banning the promotion and sale of tobacco industry products.
The following organizations were presented with their awards on Tuesday, December 4th:
| Helping Hand Award for employers that provide support to their employees to quit smoking |

Winter Active
In any type of weather, physical activity provides important benefits. At any age, active people have less chance of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancers. They are better able to sleep, cope with stress and depression and have more energy.
Canada's Physical Activity Guide recommends adults should strive to be active for 30 minutes a day at a moderate pace. Build physical activity into your daily routine at work starting slowly and increasing gradually. Choose a variety of activities including endurance, flexibility and strength.
Here are some tips to remember when being physically active during the winter months:
- Before heading off to work, check the weather forecast and be sure to dress in layers to stay warm, with an outer layer that is wind and/or waterproof.
- Wear a hat to prevent heat loss from the scalp and mittens (instead of gloves) as they allow the air to circulate and keep your hands warmer.
- Even in the winter it is important to protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that filter UVA and UVB.
- Use the stairs at work and take physical activity breaks during meetings or stretch breaks at your desk.
- Minutes count! Add up your activities throughout the day and enjoy our Canadian winter.
