Healthy Eating in the Workplace

Workplaces incur a significant cost for overweight and obese employees in the form of losses related to lower productivity, higher rates of injury, disability and absenteeism, increased insurance premiums, worker’s compensation, medical costs and early retirement.

In Canada, in 2005, 63% of employed men and 50% of employed women were either overweight or obese.

Most employed adults spend at least a quarter of their lives at work.  The demands of work may negatively affect the ability of an employee to follow a healthy eating pattern, which may contribute to weight gain.

In contrast, healthy eating is associated with a lower risk of developing chronic diseases and can contribute to the overall health and vitality of your employees.

Studies show that employees are more likely to remain with employers that value their health.  Additionally, investments in nutrition promotion may pay for themselves in a reduction of absenteeism, injury and increase in productivity.

Therefore, employers can improve the eating habits of their employees by providing information and skill building opportunities to help them eat better, while changing worksites to create supportive healthy eating environment.
